Designing for operating rooms

Operating rooms are perhaps the most complex and most important areas in a hospital. They are the profit centers of the hospital, capable of earning as much $100,000 in a single day, as such facility managers require that the finishes used in these areas be able to perform well, even under constant use. Therefore it is critical to select the right flooring and walling for these areas, as well as the appropriate detailing techniques to ensure a successful installation.

Some of the critical points to consider when designing for operating rooms include:
  • Floor and wall durability, PSI
  • Stain resistance
  • Slip resistance
  • Compliance to the latest regulatory standards (FGI, USP, CSA Z8000)
  • Installation detailing specific to hygienic areas
  • Sterilization and maintenance programs

Every operating room is different, so it’s important to understand what type of room is needed, what are the procedures that will be performed, what types of chemicals and cleaners will be used, and what is most important to that facility.
