Creating a home-like feeling through flooring

Södertälje’s increased need for residential care homes was the primary motivation for building the Björkmossen facility, inaugurated in the fall of 2018.

In order to create a space that allows residents the opportunity to live actively while offering a harmonious and comfortable environment, the facility required a quality floor that met its rigorous care requirements. It was necessary to find a solution that balanced comfort and efficiency. With this in mind, a traditional wooden floor was not a suitable alternative for the Björkmossen project.

Eventually, the Björkmossen team selected Altro Wood Acoustic for use throughout the facility’s corridors and public spaces. “Wooden floors are both environmentally friendly and aesthetic,” explained architect Lars Almstedt, “but are not satisfactory in care facilities where the floors must be cleanable and able to withstand various kinds of liquids. Altro Wood can handle demanding conditions while offering a comfortable floor that reduces stress on the feet and knees of staff.”

“This is a place working around the clock, and it is of utmost importance that people enjoy being here,” stated Lena Backlund, Head of Results at Björkmossen nursing home. “We have a lot of focus on the residents being participative and active, and sometimes it gets very lively in corridors and public spaces. Thankfully, these floors both reduce sound and are comfortable to walk on, which significantly increases the quality of life for both residents and staff.”

With Altro Wood Acoustic, Björkmossen’s staff can easily move equipment throughout the facility without disturbing residents while providing underfoot comfort.
