Falls Prevention Awareness Day

Every 13 seconds, a fall accident sends an older adult to an emergency room.  Every 20 minutes, one dies from a fall accident.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) is standing up to thwart these with the 8th annual Falls Prevention Awareness Day (FPAD) on September 23, the first day of Fall. Its purpose is to raise awareness of, and how to reduce, fall injuries among the elderly. This year’s theme: Take a stand to prevent falls.

Since the program debuted in 2008, FPAD has grown from an initial 11 states supporting it to 48, including Washington D.C.

According to the NCOA, one in three Americans ages 65 and over fall each year, totaling 12 million falls. The 2013 total cost of fall injuries was around $34B and, by 2020, costs are estimated at $67.7B.
