Altro products are HACCP Certified

Altro products are HACCP certified blog banner

Each year, 76 million people in the U.S. get sick from contaminated food. Research shows that the contamination of surfaces is the fifth leading cause of food poisoning.

To prove a surface is food-safe, Hazard Analysis Critical Point (HACCP) certification can be issued. HACCP is a systematic approach to food safety that addresses risks presented by physical, chemical and biological hazards through prevention rather than finished product inspection. A non-food product, such as a floor, wall or other interior finish can be HACCP certified.

Altro’s products are one of the few worldwide flooring and walling products to have achieved HACCP International certification for non-food services and supplies.

Products that demonstrate food safety excellence in design, materials and manufacture may carry the HACCP International certification mark, confirming their fitness for purpose in food processes governed by the HACCP program.

Slip resistance and cleanliness are a major part of kitchen safety, but the prevention of surfaces from harboring bacteria cannot be ignored. With a product that is both slip resistant and HACCP certified, you get the best of slip and fall safety combined with resistance from food contamination.

Altro and biophilic design

Altro and biophilic design blog banner

What is Biophilia?

The biophilia hypothesis suggests that there is an instinctive bond between human beings and nature.  Edward O. Wilson introduced and popularized the hypothesis in his book, Biophilia (1984). He defines biophilia as "the urge to affiliate with other forms of life.”  It has since been expanded to include all forms of the natural environment, from plants and trees to rocks, sand and earth.

Biophilia can be overt – wood tones and images of nature.  It can also be more subtle such as natural themes incorporated into building or product design.

Benefits of Biophilia

The benefits of biophilic design are clear.  Studies have shown that exposure to nature and natural images can help with the healing process, reduce absenteeism, increase productivity and improve mood.

In healthcare this is of exceptional importance.  Patients whose windows overlooked natural sceneries were released after 7.96 days, compared to the 8.71 days it took for patients who looked at brick walls. (1)  In terms of dollars and cents, this means patient care costs could have been reduced by as much $161,000 if patients were released just one day sooner. (2)

Green building programs like LEED and the Well Building Standard offer credits for projects that take advantage of these type of design elements.

Biophilia even benefits the workplace. Studies have shown that staff problems that can be attributed to poor interior design include staff illness, absenteeism, retention, and overall job performance. With good, biophilic interior design these issues are minimized by 10 percent. (3) In any business employees are one of the most costly expenses and any way a business can reduce absenteeism and improve productivity is worth its weight in gold.

Altro and biophilic design

Altro has made biophilic design a part of its design process of some of our newer products, from the overtly natural designs in our Altro Wood Collection to a subtler influence in our new colors of Altro Aquarius.

These 16 shades have been developed with comfort, warmth and relaxation in mind to make the bathing experience more enjoyable and avoiding the clinical feel that some home-from-home environments create. Inspired by nature, the 16 appealing tones draw on elements found in natural objects such as pebbles, shells, and stone.

Color trends in interior design: Greenery

Color trend lime green banner

Create an on-trend look in your space using Altro floors and walls

Inspired by Pantone’s 2017 color of the year, Greenery – lime green is Altro’s version of the bold and bright trend. Pantone describes their color as “A refreshing and revitalizing shade, symbolic of new beginnings. Greenery is a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew. Illustrative of flourishing foliage and the lushness of the great outdoors, the fortifying attributes of Greenery signals consumers to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate.”

We made Greenery our own by including colors within the Altro products color palette! Altro Symphonia Margarita matches with this trend and will bring all of the refreshing properties of Greenery to your space.

Lime green works well as an accent color balanced with a neutral like white or cool, light gray. Adding subtle elements of aqua as a pop of color will help the lime green stand out even more. Above you can see our color ratio suggestions for working with this trend.
