St. Luke’s Hospital

Altro makes the grade in a busy Intensive Care Unit

Altro Symphonia, Altro Aquarius, Altro Wood

St. Luke’s Hospital, a Southcoast Hospital Group affiliate based in Bedford Massachusetts, hired Lavallee Brensinger Architects to conduct a facility wide study to find a new location for their existing ICU + CCU. Considerable analysis was undertaken to document and identify current and future state conditions including: travel distances; and patient, staff, and equipment work flow.

The completed study supported conversion of an existing wing to a 16-bed intensive care unit, improving efficiency and allowing staff to provide the highest level of care. The study also planned for a future Trauma ICU in an adjacent suite.

Southcoast’s St Luke’s Hospital had established finish standards in place, however at the start of the ICU project, when reviewing which standard materials to be used for this project, it was noted that several of their standard flooring finishes had been discontinued, including a discontinued Altro sheet good.

This presented an opportunity to review several new options for consideration for their new ICU. A test zone was set up in a busy staff corridor and mock up materials were installed.

After several months, the Altro products continued to hold up to cleaning and maintenance by the St Luke’s team, leading to the approval of Altro Symphonia, Altro Wood and Altro Aquarius for use in the Intensive Care Unit.

Altro Symphonia was selected for the overall solid appearance; the subtle color flecks helped the floor have some interest without a too solid visual.

For inside the patient rooms, the Altro Wood warmly defines the patient and family zones. The patient bathrooms include a shower, so for slip resistance and patient safety Altro Aquarius was selected for this area.

“All [the] product’s could be welded together for a continuous flooring surface, which made using the Altro family of flooring an easy choice,” said Nico Flannery-Pitcher, Senior Associate at Lavallee Brensinger Architects.
